85-Year-Old Time Capsule Found During McCoy Stadium’s Demolition
Fans of the former PawSox and the beloved McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket are getting one more surprise before the demolition is complete.
Shawmut Design and Construction have uncovered an 85-year-old time capsule in the stadium’s original cornerstone, and crew members continue their search for an alleged second one.

Time Capsule Discovered at McCoy Stadium
According to reports, the time capsule was found in the stadium’s cornerstone, dating back to November 3rd, 1940.
“I’m pleased that this time capsule has been found and preserved so it can be shared with future generations of Pawtucket residents as a reminder of the stadium’s proud history,” said the Pawtucket City Council President Terrence Mercer.
The capsule is being kept in a safe place by the Pawtucket Police.

What Is in the McCoy Stadium Time Capsule?
At this time, the time capsule remains shut. It will be opened during a special ceremony on June 23rd, marking the 44th anniversary of the longest professional baseball game ever played.
In 1981, the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings went for 33 innings at McCoy and played for over 8 hours. The game started on April 18th and was not officially finished until June 23rd, when Pawtucket's Dave Koza drove home the winning run.
Crews are still looking for a second time capsule that is believed to have memorabilia from baseball’s longest game and is supposedly buried between home plate and the pitcher’s mound.
