The rumors are true. A second time capsule has been found during the demolition of Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium.

After the first one was found last week in the stadium’s original cornerstone, the second one was located by Shawmut Design and Construction and is said to hold precious moments from baseball’s longest game in history.

Second Time Capsule Found in Pawtucket

The city of Pawtucket shared the exciting news on Tuesday, giving fans of the beloved McCoy Stadium one more thing to hold on to.

The contents of the capsule hold memorabilia from a game in 1981, when the Pawtucket Red Sox took on the Rochester Red Wings at McCoy Stadium. It became the longest game ever played in baseball history, with game time reaching over 8 hours.

Jason Allard, a local video production manager, took a deep dive into the historic moment.

“The game started at 8:25 pm and was stopped, with the game still tied, at 4:07 am,” he said. “Normally, the game would have been stopped at 12:50 am, but the rulebook the Homeplate umpire had failed to mention this curfew rule, so the game just kept going.”

The final inning was eventually played on June 23rd where the PawSox finally secured the victory.

Special Meaning Behind McCoy Stadium’s Time Capsule

“The longest game is part of McCoy Stadium’s legacy, and finding this time capsule means a part of that legacy will live on, even as we take down the stadium to make way for our beautiful new Pawtucket High School,” said Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien in a statement.

On June 23rd, both time capsules will be opened during a special ceremony to commemorate the PawSox, McCoy Stadium, and that special game in history.

Stay tuned for more details on that time capsule event.
