Newport Lighthouse Offers Overnight Stay With Ghostly Encounters
Sitting on 18 acres of solitude stands the Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island. Only accessible by boat, this historic light station on Narragansett Bay offers a unique overnight experience for anyone looking to escape for a night or even a week. But if you choose to stay, beware. Tales of paranormal activity have plagued the island for decades.
Construction for the Rose Island Lighthouse began in 1869 during a time when Rhode Island was becoming a hot spot for shipping traffic. Its glory days came to an end in 1970 after the construction of the Newport Pell Bridge, making the lighthouse obsolete. It would sit vacant for 20 years, only providing shelter to vandals and looters.
The lighthouse got a second chance at life when the City of Newport took ownership, thanks to the efforts put forth by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation.
By 1993, it was restored and back in operation as a museum, with several rooms available for overnight stays.
Each room offers a peek into the maritime lifestyle while the location provides unbeatable views of one of the most beautiful places in Rhode Island.
While the Rose Island website highlights its stunning features, it neglects to mention a small, yet very important fact about the island and the lighthouse. Stories of disembodied voices and crying have been reported, and a woman dressed in white has been spotted, gazing out to the ocean from the lighthouse tower. The island was even the subject of an episode on the popular television show Ghost Hunters, where the crew recorded several moments of unexplained activity.
Think you’re brave enough to spend a night? Let’s look inside.
