Once again, New Bedford is back on the map thanks to the nostalgia of hip-hop.

New Bedford rapper Siahlaw's career moment came Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. He arrived as a guest of Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck and ended the night performing onstage alongside members of the legendary hip-hop group during its sold-out Massachusetts show.

Siahlaw joined Inspectah Deck for “Shaolin Rebel 2,” a collaboration the two released this summer. The song has already racked up hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify, but even with its success, Siahlaw had no idea when he arrived in Mansfield that he would get the chance to perform it that night.

Hip-Hop Has Always Been More Than Music

Siahlaw told me he has been professionally involved in hip-hop for roughly 25 years, but music has always meant much more to him than simply trying to build a career.

“Hip hop is, for me, it’s my life,” he said. “It’s actually my outlet.”

His relationship with Inspectah Deck began back in 2022, when the two recorded their first song together. From there, they continued building a friendship through music, with Siahlaw describing Deck as someone who has taken on somewhat of a mentoring role in his career.

Two Minutes Before Showtime

That connection is what brought Siahlaw, his wife, and his business partner to the Xfinity Center as Deck's guests Saturday night. They were hanging out in the friends and family section when Siahlaw suddenly learned his role at the concert was about to become much bigger. “It was about two minutes before the show began,” Siahlaw said.

There wasn't much time to panic, rehearse or overthink anything, but apparently that wasn't necessary. “I was ready,” he said. “I stay ready. They say, if you stay ready, you don’t got to get ready.”

Siahlaw followed Deck toward the stage and was told there would be about four songs before it was his turn to come out. While waiting for his cue, instead of letting the nerves take over, he tried to enjoy what was happening around him. “It was just like me soaking it all up and pinching myself,” he said. “Like, this is really going down right now.”

A Pair of Sneakers and a Promise

About a year earlier, Siahlaw said Inspectah Deck gave him and his business partner each a pair of limited-edition sneakers. Siahlaw made a promise to himself that he wouldn't wear his pair until the day he performed alongside Wu-Tang Clan. Saturday night, he finally opened the box.

“I vowed not to wear them until I was performing with them,” he said.

From New Bedford to a Sold-Out Crowd

The moment represented a huge leap from some of Siahlaw's previous performances, including performing locally at New Bedford's Zeiterion. Before Saturday night, he estimated the largest crowd he had ever performed in front of was about 5,000 people. This time around, he stepped onto the stage in front of a sold-out crowd at one of the biggest concert venues in Massachusetts. “This is what every artist prays for,” Siahlaw said.

After roughly 25 years in hip-hop, a relationship that began with Inspectah Deck in 2022 and a pair of sneakers he refused to wear until the moment felt right, Siahlaw finally got the opportunity he had been picturing.

Lastly, when asked what his message to New Bedford was, he simply answered. "My name, which is Siahlaw, which breaks down to 'Silently, I aim high.' Always think bigger than if you think you can attain it, then you're not thinking big enough. "
