Sometimes all it takes is one familiar face in the crowd to show just how much respect a local movement is getting. That was the case Saturday night at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center during “New B at The Z,” when rapper Joyner Lucas quietly showed up to support New Bedford’s hip-hop scene.

The sold-out style atmosphere inside The Z already had energy buzzing as local artists Caliph, Hendrick Hernandez-Resto, Siahlaw and DJ Fresco took over the historic stage for a night dedicated to New Bedford hip-hop. Then came word backstage and around the bar that Joyner Lucas was in the building.

One of the first people to recognize him was Zeiterion bartender Sarah Fernandes.

“I didn’t expect to look up and see him lol,” Fernandes said. “I was like I would love to make you a drink but can I please get a pic!!!”

Thankfully for her, the Worcester rapper was more than happy to oblige. “He was so cool about it!” she said. “He drank a rum and coke. He asked the guy that was buying what he was having and said he would get the same.”

A Major Show of Respect for New Bedford Artists

For local artists grinding to build a name in hip-hop, having someone like Joyner Lucas show up speaks volumes.

Joyner has become one of the biggest names in rap to come out of Massachusetts over the past decade, earning national attention for viral tracks, lyrical storytelling and collaborations with artists like Eminem, Chris Brown and Lil Baby. So for him to spend part of his weekend inside The Z supporting New Bedford talent felt like a major stamp of approval for the city’s growing music scene, and honestly, it fit the entire vibe of “New B at The Z.”

The event itself was built around unity and collaboration, featuring special performances from Caliph, Hendrick Hernandez-Resto and Siahlaw backed by DJ Fresco on the decks and The Seshn Band. The entire concept celebrated local artists working together to elevate hip-hop in New Bedford.

Not Joyner’s First SouthCoast Sighting

This also isn’t the first time Joyner Lucas has been spotted showing love on the SouthCoast. Back in 2024, he made headlines after stopping at an ice cream shop in Fall River, surprising locals and creating a social media frenzy.
