Mattapoisett Special Olympics Athlete Aims to Compete in US Games

Michael Hogan of Mattapoisett has done it again.

Last week, the 17-year-old Special Olympics athlete took the number one spot in the state championships for bowling, making it three years in a row for the bowling all-star.

After getting recognition from a Boston Celtics athlete, Michael is excited to continue his bowling journey and has his sights set on the U.S. Olympic Games in 2026.

Who Is Michael Hogan?

At a young age, Michael showed interest in sports. His father, Jim Hogan, shared how Michael used to watch YouTube videos to learn as much as possible, and soon, he knew he had to get his son into sports.

Michael was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3, and as he got older, team sports proved difficult. He wasn’t getting the attention he needed. With a little help from his parents and his grandmother, Michael was introduced to the world of bowling, and his life changed forever.

At 17, Michael has countless gold medals. Last week, he added even more.

Michael Hogan Wins Bowling State Championship

To capture gold, Hogan bowled a 632 series (three games total), with a 211 average.

“I am very proud of him,” said his mother, Sharon. “It’s so cool to watch him. He has the ability to learn and figure out the oil patterns on the lane. It’s amazing.”

After being the No. 1 bowler in the state tournament, Michael received a signed bowling pin from Boston Celtic Derek White.

That would be good enough for some athletes, but Michael is ready to achieve another milestone.

Michael Hogan Has Dreams of Competing in the Olympic Games

In 2026, the U.S. Special Olympic Games will take place in Minnesota, and Michael hopes to be a part of the bowling team, but there is a catch.

“You have to be nominated by a coach to be on the team,” Sharon said. “His coach at New Bedford Special Olympics would have to specifically nominate him.”

With three straight wins in the state championships, it’s safe to say Michael would shine brightly on the big stage.
