I grew up in Tewksbury, the hometown to Market Basket's national headquarters. Going to Market Basket wasn't an event. It was just going to the grocery store.

When New Bedford got its very own Market Basket in 2010, it was immediately apparent that this grocery store was different.

The savings were almost intoxicating to the shoppers at the Sawyer Street store. The adrenaline started pumping when they reached the Coggeshall Street lights, which only increased when they landed a parking spot outside.

Inside was a Who's Who of New Bedford mixed with the Hunger Games (no pun intended). It was best to prepare for full contact grocery shopping.

Then, came Fall River.  It wasn't long before Fall River shoppers started bragging about how their Market Basket was bigger and had a better meat selection/deli.

Now, there appears to be a new kid coming to town.  According to the Northern Bristol County Massachusetts Register of Deeds, Market Basket has bought a Showcase Cinemas complex in Seekonk for a whopping $9.5 million.  The theater recently purchased is the one that is still open near Target, not the abandoned one across from the former 99 Restaurant.

The document reveals that the land sale took place on July 17.  NAI Entertainment Holdings LLC (the company that owns Showcase Cinemas) sold the broken-down site to DeMoulas Supermarkets Inc.  Market Basket used to be named after the founder of the original stores, the DeMoulas family.

What a win for the community of Seekonk. The people in that town will soon enjoy the convenience of a Market Basket without driving to Fall River. No word yet from Market Basket corporate offices about when we can expect to Get More For Our Dollar in Seekonk.
