LAKEVILLE (WBSM) — A teenage jet skier was rescued by a Lakeville Police lieutenant Thursday night after getting stranded on an island in Long Pond.

Police Receive Missing Teen Report

Lakeville Police Chief Matthew J. Perkins said the department received a report shortly after 8 p.m. on September 25 that an 18-year-old Lakeville resident was more than an hour late from returning from an excursion on Long Pond.

He said moments later, a 911 call came in from a resident who lives near the pond and reported hearing shouts for help coming from the water.

Rescue on Lewis Island

Lakeville Police and the Lakeville Fire Department both responded to the scene, with Police Lieutenant Ryan Maltais operating the department’s boat. He was able to locate the missing teen on Lewis Island at about 8:48 p.m.

Perkins said the teen told police he was thrown from the jet ski and swam to the island, which is inhabited but only accessible by boat.

Teen Evaluated After Rescue

The teen was evaluated by the fire department and declined to be taken to the hospital. His jet ski was still missing, after it was not found before darkness and weather forced officials to call off the search.

The incident remains under investigation by Lakeville Police and Massachusetts Environmental Police.
