Jason Derulo Did Something at the Dartmouth Mall He Never Did Again
When Jason Derulo Was Just Getting Started
One of the best parts of my career here at Fun 107 has been meeting and working with some of the most successful artists over the past 30 years. One of those artists is Jason Derulo.
Know Anyone in the Pics Below From the Jason Derulo Show at the Dartmouth Mall?
When Jason was first breaking into the world of music, we invited him to perform for Fun 107 fans. His first single, "Whatcha Say," was still pretty new when we invited him at the beginning of September 2009. He quickly agreed to come to the Dartmouth Mall for a free performance on October 12, 2009. It was Columbus Day, so he routed his tour to include Dartmouth, MA as a stop.
A Song That Changed Everything
Something remarkable happened, though, in the month between our invitation and his arrival at the Dartmouth Mall. "Whatcha Say" went from being a mid charting hit to skyrocketing to the top of the charts. It went five times platinum on its way to number one on the Billboard chart. No doubt about it, "Whatcha Say" was one of the most popular songs in America when Derulo arrived at center court that day. Thousands of fans packed the mall. Was someone you know at the show? See the pictures below!
Did Jason Derulo Really Sign Autographs For Every Fan
He performed three songs, and then did something I had never seen an artist do. After his performance, Derulo took five minutes to towel off, then sat down at our Fun 107 table and signed autographs for every single listener. It took well over an hour.
His dedication to his fans was astounding. As it was happening, I was talking to his management team. We all knew that this era of his career was quickly coming to a close. I honestly think the Dartmouth Mall show was the very last time Derulo was able to sign autographs for all of his fans after a show. He had crossed a threshold that made it unsustainable.
Why This Show Still Stands Out Today
There are a number of YouTube videos uploaded from that night at the Dartmouth Mall. One of the most interesting things to notice is that nearly no one in the audience had their phones out recording the show. iPhones were still relatively new, and most of the audience just paid attention to the performance rather than having their noses buried in a screen.
We dug into our archives and found a bunch of photos from that day. Do you recognize anyone who as at the mall to see Jason Derulo?
