Massachusetts Dad Gets Real Advice From Jason Derulo
I was recently given the opportunity to go one-on-one with global superstar Jason Derulo to discuss his latest album, and to my surprise, the conversation turned into something a lot more personal than I expected.
As a father of an almost one-year-old, I walked away with something I didn’t even know I needed: real, genuine dad advice from one of the biggest artists in the world.
That hit different.
A New Era for Jason Derulo
In case you haven't heard, Derulo is stepping into a brand-new chapter with his latest project, The Last Dance (Part 1), which he describes as the closing of one era and the beginning of another. When we talked about what led to that shift, he explained how much he’s changed. Not just musically, but personally.
“You look at your old self and feel like that person is completely different,” he told me. “It’s time for a new chapter. A new era.”
Fans got a taste of that evolution during his recent tour, where he blended the hits everyone knows with a preview of what’s coming next.
‘Sexy For Me’ Is Catching Fire
One of the standout tracks right now is “Sexy For Me,” and Derulo is clearly seeing it connect in real time. “It’s about a woman getting ready to go out and feeling like her most confident, best version of herself,” he said.
If you’ve seen the viral transition videos online, you already know that this one is taking on a life of its own.
A Nostalgic Twist With ‘Complicated’
As someone who grew up during the Avril Lavigne era, I had to ask about “Complicated,” which flips the early-2000s classic into something fresh with a reggaeton-inspired vibe. It’s nostalgic, but also modern in a way that feels intentional.
Derulo explained that the message goes deeper than just the sound.
“People see a headline or a post and create a story,” he said. “But life is way more complicated than that.”
From Pop Star to Author
Beyond the music, Derulo is also expanding into a new lane as an author, releasing both adult and children’s books centered around motivation and self-belief. It’s all about giving people, and young dreamers, the kind of guidance he didn’t always have.
“I bumped my head a million times,” he said. “If I had something guiding me back then, I would’ve made fewer mistakes.”
It’s a different side of him, but one that feels just as impactful as his music.
The Dad Advice That Hit Home
Then came the moment that stuck with me the most. As a new dad, I asked him what fatherhood has taught him, and his answer was as real as it gets.
“You don’t know love until you’re a father,” he said. “And every year, that love grows more and more.”

What really stood out was the shift in perspective.
“I’m not as selfish as I used to be," Derulo said. "It’s not about me anymore, it’s about my son.”
A SouthCoast Memory That Still Lives On
Before wrapping up, I had to take him back to a moment to his massive appearance at the Dartmouth Mall. At the time, “Whatcha Say” was blowing up, and thousands of fans packed in to see him. Instead of making a quick exit, Derulo stayed and signed autographs for everyone.

He said he still remembers it to this day, and that it even led to a small but funny change in his career.
“I used to just sign ‘JD,’” he laughed. “People wanted my full name, so I switched it up.”
What’s Next
With The Last Dance (Part 1) out now and Part 2 on the way later this year, Derulo is clearly just getting started with this next chapter. As for the next time he’s anywhere near the SouthCoast? We’re getting him in studio for a full-circle one-on-one.
