For all who have missed New Bedford's beloved Freestones City Grill, the wait is finally over.

I got to welcome back the legendary downtown restaurant for its soft opening recently.

Every bite of every dish was better than the last.

From the “OG” Syrian nachos to the refreshingly zesty Thai chili stir fry and, finally, the melt-in-your-mouth Pulled Pig Melt, all paired perfectly with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. I topped it all off with a petite apple crisp.

Also, what a sigh of relief to see the Asian turkey salad remain strong on the menu.

As for the service, the food came quickly and the servers were attentive and well-mannered. The atmosphere was cozy (as it always was) and the decor, while new in some respects. retained that Freestones nostalgia.

I can't forget about Darwin the golden chimp, who was hanging high above the bar like he always did so well.

"It went very smoothly," owner Howie Mallowes said of that opening. "We were expecting some bumps in the road, but our staff exceeded expectations and did very well. I'm happy to have everyone who came out and supported and had a great time."

I can’t say enough about this place. I applaud Mallowes and founding owner and head of hospitality Debby Seguin for returning this staple to the city.
