Providence News WPRI Channel 12 Goes in Depth With Gazelle’s Swim Journey [VIDEO]
It’s been almost a week since WPRI aired a special segment highlighting my swim journey with the Buzzards Bay Coalition, and my phone has been ringing off the hook from family and friends who watched it on Channel 12 news. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and heartwarming.
The series, called ‘Street Stories,’ covers local events and people making a difference in the area or the world. Hosted by the esteemed Mike Montecalvo and produced and filmed by the talented Johnny Villella, the news crew followed my every move while training. Their goal was to provide viewers with a more in-depth understanding of the challenges and preparations involved in my journey. I’m forever grateful for their dedication and the platform they provided.
For those unfamiliar with the event, I’m preparing to participate in the Buzzards Bay Swim for the first time after years of hosting its afterparty. The swim, organized by the Buzzards Bay Coalition to protect and restore the bay, spans 1.2 miles from New Bedford to Fairhaven. While I’ve always been an avid supporter of the cause, I’ve never actually taken the plunge myself. This year, however, I decided to dive in—literally. My preparation involves rigorous training in cold waters, which can be quite difficult at times, and I’ve planned a mix of freestyle and backstroke to complete the swim.
My motivation stems from a minor heart attack I experienced four years ago. This health scare underscored the importance of physical and mental health, which I now prioritize. The Buzzards Bay Swim is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a testament to my commitment to health and a cause I deeply care about. The event, which raises funds for bay restoration, will be well-supported by safety personnel, ensuring a secure experience for all participants.
Mark your calendars for June 22 at 7:30 AM—I’m ready to make a splash for a cleaner bay.
