The Audubon Society of Rhode Island wants everyone to discover the joys of birding by offering free events throughout May at locations all across the Ocean State (and even a few in Massachusetts).

It's a new month and the society hopes to spend it welcoming novice birders to its many wildlife refuges throughout the state. The non-profit has free bird walks planned every day in May and wants to see you there.

The events are just as they sound: walks through the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's many wildlife refuge locations learning about the birds that make their homes there.

The ASRI describes the walks as mostly aimed toward teens and adults, though there are Saturday walks planned specifically for families. Each walk is aimed at teaching those new to birding the joys of the hobby and ways to get started.

May is the perfect month for these free events, too, because of the bird migration going on. Warmer weather has many birds returning to New England for the first time in months, giving birders new birds to see every week while they are out enjoying a walk in the fresh air.

A win-win for those looking for a new hobby and some exercise this spring.

All the events are free, though most require pre-registration to attend. Plus, every day brings the free birding to a new location.

Closest to the SouthCoast are the Sunday bird walks at Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk and the Thursday bird walks in Tiverton at the Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge, though a quick look at the ASRI calendar will show you all the places you can go.

Caratunk also offers family walks on Saturdays if you want to start your kids or grandkids off on a birding adventure as well.
