Cape Cod Sees Four Confirmed Shark Sightings in One Day

We are just about one week into the summer season and Massachusetts waters have already been home to seven confirmed shark sightings.

Beachgoers should already be on high alert after researchers confirmed four shark sightings on Sunday alone. Users of the new and improved Sharktivity app were sending in alerts to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy all weekend long and four of those sightings were confirmed by researchers.

The app allows people out at the beach or on boats to send photos, texts and even video of what they are seeing in the waters around them and have real shark researchers confirm their sightings.

The images sent from users were pretty graphic.

Just before 9 a.m. on Sunday, one user sent a photo of bloody waters and a dorsal fin spotted near Monomoy Island and two separate users found dead sharks on the beach near Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard and a Chatham beach on the Cape.

Last week there was even footage of a great white shark feasting on a dead whale off Nantucket near Great Point Lighthouse.

I suppose that means people who want to take shark tours are more likely to spot something this season. Yet it also means the beaches are going to be on high alert all summer long.

The first shark sighting of the season was on May 30, with two more happening on June 1. This weekend's four sightings in one day bring the season's total to seven already and we're just getting started.

It seems we could see some sort of record-breaking shark season in Massachusetts before summer 2022 is over.
