Cape Cod Well in Sandwich Seems to Be a Mystery of History
SANDWICH (WBSM) — Well, well, well…it looks like we have a mystery of history on our hands in the Cape Cod town of Sandwich, Massachusetts.
On Main Street, there is a well in front of a garage that appears to be something very old, although the housing around it seems relatively modern.
A sign proclaims it as “Old Jim Drawdy’s Well” and claims it is over 221 years old, although it’s not clear when the sign was posted.
The sign reads:
“Old Jim Drawdy’s Well
O’er 221 yrs have passed yet here I am
Pray leave a coin that I stay to quench your thirst another day”
The rustic (and rusted) pump comes up from the ground and is covered in coins, some nearly as oxidized as the pump handle itself.
It's unlikely the pump will move, but I didn't try it.
Since I first noticed the well when driving by a year ago, I’ve tried finding out more information on it but can’t come up with anything about it.
Is it an actual site of historical significance, or just something made up around an old well pump that was left on the property?
There’s nothing online about it, and we tried reaching out to organizations in Sandwich that would be in the know, but alas, nothing has surfaced.
I guess you could say the well of information has run dry.
While you’re likely not going to get any water out of Old Jim Drawdy’s Well, you definitely can get yourself a nice cool drink of some of the best-tasting water you’ll ever taste at the artesian well a short distance down Main Street.
It's located in front of the Old Town Hall, over by the Dexter Grist Mill. It's not only fantastic water, but one of the prettiest scenes in town.
