If you're a Rhode Islander you know Bristol and July 4th go together like milk and coffee syrup (or peanut butter and jelly for those who don't get the reference).

So when it was announced that the Bristol 4th of July Concert Series was moving from the beloved Independence Park to Roger Williams University, there were fireworks – and not the good kind.

An uproar of complaints and heartbreak hit social media as many residents shared their thoughts on the matter.

What They're Saying About the Fourth of July Changes in Bristol

Here's a sampling from WPRI's Facebook page:

"Great. Less congestion downtown, more parking."

"I understand both sides."

"Whoever made this decision is a moron."

"It belongs downtown near water and restaurants."

"That's too bad...won't be the same."

"This is unfortunate."

"I liked it at the college. More room and better parking."

"What a shame."

"This is a disastrous decision."

The decision to move the location is a logistical one. The committee sites more accessible parking, hundreds of available parking spaces, and more accommodations for those with disabilities as reasons for the move.

"This decision was made with careful consideration, prioritizing security, safety, and emergency access, as well as accommodations for large crowds," wrote Camille Teixeira, Chairman of the Bristol Fourth of July Committee.

She and the team posted a letter stating the official announcement on their website. Teixeira thanked the community for their continued support and reminded them "we strive to make this year's concert series a memorable, SAFE, and enjoyable experience for everyone."

Bristol's Fourth of July History

The history of July 4th in Bristol dates back to the 1700s. The first parade marched down the streets in 1785. This year marks the 240th Fourth of July celebration.

The current parade route is indicated with red, white and blue paint on the centerline of the streets as opposed to the traditional yellow. It's the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in the country.

The entire weekend is full of festivities including a carnival, Miss & Little Miss Fourth of July pageant, concert series, and of course, fireworks.
