And now I have to enroll at the University of Virginia! This summer they have added a course that I would love to take while at the same time can't believe is a real thing.

As Jon Blistein of Rolling Stone magazine reported, the fine folks at UVA have added a summer course to study why "Winter is Coming."

Yes, for four weeks the HBO hit series and George R.R. Martin's epic A Song of Ice and Fire novels will be the topic of discussion in an English course at the university.

It may sound a little silly to have a class built around watching and then talking about Game of Thrones episodes, but as associate professor of English Lisa Woolfork sees it her class will learn

how the skills that we use to study literature are very useful skills for reading literature and TV in conjunction.”

She also adds that while GoT is popular, it is also interesting and very serious and that

There are a lot of things in the series that are very weighty, and very meaningful, and can be illuminated through the skills of literary analysis.”

And so the episode will be analysed (aka watched repeatedly) and discussed in a classroom setting. And these kids get course credit for this! Awesome!

There is work involved however. The students will take turns leading the discussions in class and will have to create their own addition to the GoT saga as a final assignment.

Totally worth it to me!
