The most talked about bridge in Rhode Island finally has a plan in place for a multi-million-dollar rebuild.
The Washington Bridge in Providence has been the cause of high blood pressure and hair pulling for local commuters since the entire westbound side was shut down in December of 2023.
Nearly a year and a half later, Walsh Construction Co. has stepped up to the plate to tackle the design-build project, boasting a projected price tag of $427 million.

“Ranked as the #1 bridge contractor in the country by Engineering News-Record, Walsh has 127 years of experience in construction and brings a proven track record of delivering on complex infrastructure projects,” said Governor Dan McKee.
In his official statement earlier this month, the governor shared that the bridge is projected for completion in November of 2028, nearly five years since the debacle began.
We have about four years to go before the Washington Bridge closure is a distant nightmare. Instead of allowing my blood to boil at the thought of three and a half more years of detours and delays, I decided to get curious.
