My mom never minded buying us Halloween costumes growing up because my sister and I would literally wear them all year long while playing pretend. Our imaginations were our greatest asset and our costumes only amplified the magic.

We were fortunate enough to have a new costume almost every year, and had quite the collection at one point. But now that we're older, we don't need all those princess and witch costumes anymore. We'll be looking into donating them so others can find the magic in them this year.

Gleason Family YMCA in Wareham is requesting members of the SouthCoast community to donate used costumes this year. Costumes for adults and kids will be collected for the month of September. The drive will provide a collection of costumes that will be used for the Halloween Costume Sale on Saturday, October 9.

The Gleason Family YMCA has been running this program for a number of years. Debbie Fringuelli is the Senior Executive Director at Gleason Family YMCA and she explains how it benefits the Y and its members.

"We ask others to donate their new or gently used costumes to this program," Fringuelli said. "We are then able to mend and clean the items to prepare for resale. The costumes are sold at a very nominal price. We do this to help families make Halloween affordable. It can be very costly to purchase new costumes each year and even so when a family has multiple children. This program does well each year and all the money we raise supports our annual campaign which provides financial aid for programs, membership, camp, daycare, etc."

Every child deserves to feel the spirit of Halloween. Will you help a local kid get to play this year?
