Escaped Cow Visits Campgrounds in Wareham and Plymouth

A cow got loose this morning in the Plymouth-Wareham area, and apparently she has an affinity for camping.

Just days after a pair of cows cut loose in Fairhaven, another cow has apparently been on the moooove all morning a little further east and maybe be looking for a nice vacation spot.

First, the Sandy Pond Campground in Plymouth posted to its Facebook page just after 7 a.m. that a cow had been spotted on the property.

“Does anyone know (the) name or phone of (the) folks with (the) farm on little Sandy? We have a cow visiting (the) park this morning and hoping they can come get her,” the post read.

Local farms and cow owners chimed in on the post to state that it wasn’t their cow, as the mystery deepened.

Then, at 11:49 a.m., the Maple Park Campground in East Wareham posted photos of a cow wandering through its park.

“‘Excuse me, but can I see your visitor pass?’” the park posted to its Facebook page. “Yep, never a dull moment at Maple Park.”

The two campgrounds are only a few miles apart as the crow flies, and the cow likely followed the power lines from Bourne Road in Plymouth, where Sandy Pond is located, over to Glen Charlie Road in East Wareham, where Maple Park is located.

Meanwhile, the Wareham Department of Natural Resources posted to its Facebook page that it was in hot pursuit of the heifer. At 12:05 p.m., it posted that the cow was last seen in the woods heading toward the Maple Springs Wildlife Management Area on Maple Springs Road.

“WDNR is in hot pursuit of this unruly cow in the vicinity of Rickie Lane in East Wareham and the power lines that run parallel to the residential area,” the DNR posted.

The DNR confirmed to WBSM that it is the same cow that made its way from one campground to the other, and that her name is Rosie and she will soon be returned home.

“We believe we have it contained in a wooded area off of Maple Springs Road and the owner has been located and responding,” Wareham DNR Director Garry Buckminster told WBSM. "The first pic was when we thought she was gonna come along with us easily, the second pic is of her having nothing to do with us and walking away."
