Wareham's Joshua Onujiogu Cut By NFL's Seattle Seahawks

After initially making the Seattle Seahawks’ 53-man roster, Wareham native Joshua Onujiogu was waived by the team Wednesday afternoon.

The Seahawks had reduced their roster to 53 on Tuesday, ahead of the NFL’s mandated Wednesday 4 p.m. deadline, with the undrafted free agent rookie Onujiogu at first making the cut.

However, the Seahawks claimed two players off waivers on Tuesday – former Panthers defensive end Darryl Johnson and former Jets cornerback Isaiah Dunn – and Onujiogu was one of two players subsequently cut in order to make room for the new acquisitions.

The 6-2, 252-pound linebacker can sign to the Seattle practice squad if he clears waivers. The Seahawks currently have four open spots on their practice squad, and head coach Pete Carroll has been very impressed with Onujiogu’s play.

After Onujiogu and fellow undrafted rookie Joey Blount, a safety, made the initial cut, Carroll praised them both.

"Joey and Josh, those guys are great examples of guys that just put their head down and competed their tails off, and they showed that," Carroll told reporters on Tuesday. "They've got the right kind of makeup to help your club."

"Josh was just really consistent and brought it and did a nice job and surprised us that he was able to stay in the competition throughout all this time,” he said.

Onujiogu, an edge rusher, shared the story of his journey to the NFL with us after signing with the Seahawks back in May.

He was a two-time MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year during his time at Division 3 Framingham State. He graduated from Wareham High School in 2016.
