WAREHAM (WBSM) — The Wareham Fire Department responded to what it described as “a wind-driven” house fire on Atlantic Avenue just after midnight on Sunday.

The occupant of the house escaped safely, and firefighters were able to remove the owner’s pet cat unharmed.

According to the fire department, Engine 1 was first on the scene and began “an aggressive attack on the rapidly-spreading fire.”

A second alarm was struck, bringing in additional Wareham firefighters and two companies from the Onset Fire Department. The Onset and Carver departments also provided mutual aid.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour, with no injuries reported. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours to wet down hot spots.

The department said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but that it does not appear to be suspicious.
