United Way of Greater New Bedford usually hosts mobile market events every Tuesday in the summer, alternating between New Bedford and Wareham locations. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to many local families unable to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables since March.

Featuring “Farmers to Families Food Boxes” from Sid Wainer & Son, USDA is partnering with farmers, ranchers, specialty crop producers, food processors and distributors, and non-profit organizations to ensure that all Americans have access to the fresh and wholesome food they need during the COVID-19 national emergency.

According to a recent Facebook post by the organization, each free 20-pound box is pre-packaged by Sid Wainer & Son and filled with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and is intended for households of more than three people struggling to access fresh produce. Each box is designed to last approximately two weeks. United Way asks that families do not come to take a box every week so that more families can benefit from this program.

United Way of Greater New Bedford will be hosting one pop-up Mobile Market per week in the communities they serve. No preregistration is required, and food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all boxes are given out. Face masks are required in order to attend a Mobile Market event.

The very first Pop Up Mobile Market took place on Tuesday, May 26 in New Bedford. The next event will be held at Freetown Elementary on Monday, June 1, from 5:30-7 pm. United Way will offer a drive-by pick up of family-sized boxes.
