Massachusetts Restaurant Owner Finds a Second Chance With Westport’s Stonewall Tavern

Just months after announcing the closure of Bootleg BBQ, local restaurateur Fred Melnyk is back in business with a brand-new concept that already has Westport talking.

The former barbecue smokehouse has officially been transformed into Stonewall Tavern, a cozy neighborhood restaurant that switched out slow-smoked brisket for shareable plates, seafood, burgers and a fresh rebrand. While the location may look familiar, Melnyk says the menu and vision are entirely new.

After opening on July 5, Stonewall Tavern marks a second chance for both the restaurant and its owner, who learned firsthand just how difficult it had become to make a living serving barbecue.

A Fresh Start After Bootleg BBQ

When Bootleg BBQ closed, Melnyk believed that chapter had come to an end. However, after a potential sale of the property ultimately fell through, he realized he had an opportunity to rethink everything.

Instead of reopening as another barbecue restaurant, Melnyk decided to completely rebrand. Rising meat costs, razor-thin profit margins and the labor-intensive preparation that comes with cooking barbecue made it increasingly difficult to stay profitable.

"Barbecue is something people love, but it's not something they eat every day," he said.

Introducing Stonewall Tavern

Rather than focusing on smoked meats, Stonewall Tavern offers what Melnyk calls "Tapas Americana." The menu features smaller, shareable plates alongside comfort-food favorites. From tuna nachos and tuna crudo to pan-seared salmon, steak frites, wings and the burgers that developed a loyal following during the Bootleg BBQ days, there's a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.

Melnyk said he plans to keep the menu flexible, allowing it to evolve based on customer feedback and seasonal ideas.

A Name Rooted in Westport

As for the restaurant's new name, it wasn't chosen at random. "Stonewall" is a nod to the countless historic stone walls that crisscross Westport's back roads and farmland, giving the restaurant a nod to my hometown of 02790. It's a simple, rustic name that fits both the town and the relaxed tavern atmosphere Melnyk wanted to create.

Stonewall Tavern also features a full bar, several beers on tap and an expanded beer selection, making it just as much a gathering place as it is a restaurant.

One Month In, the Response Has Been Encouraging

Now about a month into business, Melnyk says the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. "The biggest challenge now is just letting people know we're open," he said. "People come in not really knowing what to expect, but they leave enjoying their time."
