If you have driven down Main Street from Fairhaven towards Acushnet, you have probably seen the Boy Scout mailbox at Oxford Center. But what is it for?

I know it's written right on the front of it but I always scratched my head as to why it was so specific to collecting just flags and eyeglasses.

This mailbox has been there ever since I can remember and I never knew why they were collecting just those items. I always just made my own assumptions.

Finally, someone told me that this mailbox actually has two very important purposes. I figured a lot of you out there may have been wondering, too, so I figured I'd share with you what I learned.

This mailbox should be used to dispense of old and torn American flags. The Boy Scouts will burn them properly. I actually found this to be interesting as I have always heard that burning our flag was against U.S. code, but I learned that it's actually the proper way to dispose of a flag that has become worn out or torn. However, there is a procedure that must be followed, and the Boy Scouts take care of that with all the flags that end up in the mailbox

The other use is for old eyeglasses. If you have prescription glasses you don't need or use anymore, throw them in this mailbox and the Boy Scouts find a new home for those glasses.
