ACUSHNET (WBSM) — Acushnet Police are searching for a suspect who may have struck several cats in the roadway while letting them out of their vehicle in the middle of South Main Street.

WBSM received a report this morning from a person who removed one of the deceased cats, described as a kitten, from the roadway. The person said someone “was apparently throwing kittens out of the window” of the vehicle “in between Century House and PJ Keating.”

Acushnet Animal Control Officer Rebekah Tomlinson received a call from someone describing what had happened, and Acushnet Police were eventually able to track down the original witness.

According to Acushnet Police Chief Chris Richmond, the witness told police that he was traveling south on South Main Street, between No. 72 and No. 107, at around 7 a.m. this morning. He then observed a small black SUV strike a cat, which then ran off.

The witness reported that further down the road, he saw the same vehicle strike another cat, which Richmond said later died and was removed by Animal Control.

The witness pulled over, and when he looked ahead, he saw another cat run away from the road.

“Because of the circumstances, he believed that the cats were let go from the black SUV, but did not actually observe the cats being thrown from the vehicle,” Richmond said.

Richmond said anyone with more information about the incident should contact the Acushnet Animal Control Officer at (508) 998-9040 or Acushnet Police at (508) 998-0240.
