TAUNTON — The state's transportation agency is announcing detours and lane closures on Rt. 24 and Rt. 140 in Taunton this week as work demolishing a series of bridges and related construction is now expected to take place through June 2027.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, work relating to the Rt. 24 - Rt. 140 interchange bridge replacement project will take place overnight through Nov. 11 and during the day for the next five years, and will impact travel in the area.

A portion of the Route 24 northbound bridge over Route 140 in Taunton will be demolished during overnight hours for the next eight days, with a nightly detour in place, MassDOT stated.

Related work will also take place during the day between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. for the duration of the contract.

Overnight Detours

MassDOT said while the existing bridge is demolished overnight, a detour will be in place starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights, ending each morning at 5 a.m.

During these hours, the right travel lane on Rt. 24 northbound between Exits 17 and 20 will be closed, and Rt. 140 north and south will be detoured at the Rt. 24 interchange.

Those heading north on Rt. 140 will have to detour by taking Exit 20A to Rt. 24 north, then Exit 20B to Rt. 44 westbound before taking the onramp Rt. 24 in the southbound direction this time. Finally, take Exit 17 to Rt. 140 northbound.

Those heading south on Rt. 140 will have to take the ramp to Rt. 24 south, then take Exit 16 to Padelford Street and take a left, before getting back on Rt. 24 heading northbound and finally taking Exit 17A to Rt. 140 south.

Daytime work

MassDOT said that daytime hour work will take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays on Rt. 24 and Rt. 140 for the duration of the construction contract.

Construction work on Rt. 140 is limited to the area between Rt. 79 and Rt. 44, and expected to continue until June 2027.

No further details on this particular project were released by the agency.

What this means for drivers

MassDOT advises drivers traveling through these areas to expect delays, reduce their speed, and use caution.

All of the scheduled construction work is weather dependent, the agency stated.
