‘Survivor’ Winners From New England
Survivor premiered 25 years ago and throughout the past 47 seasons, we've seen many locals compete for the title of Sole Survivor.
It's no surprise some of the most intense and ruthless competitors came from right here in our neck of the woods.
Here are five New Englanders who have taken home the million dollar prize on Survivor:
Richard Hatch
Hailing from Newport, Rhode Island, Hatch was the first winner of Survivor. He was known for catching fish and being nude. There were a lot of blurred parts during the first season and while that kept heads turning at home. Hatch had fellow contestants in a tizzy by creating the first alliance – at least I think it was the first.
Never before had a see a small group working together to succeed in a reality competition show. Nowadays, contestants enter houses, castles and islands and immediately pinpoint who they'll be working with. Oh yeah, and who could forget about his legal troubles?
Ethan Zohn
Skip ahead to Season 3 where players competed in Africa. Zohn, a Lexington, Massachusetts native and former professional soccer player, won the hearts of many as his warm demeanor and solid game play earned him the title of Sole Survivor.
He went on to compete in a few more shows include additional Survivor seasons, but he caught another wave of media attention when it was revealed he had Hodgkin's lymphoma. Zohn has since beat cancer twice and still lives in New England.
Sandra Diaz-Twine
Known as the "Queen" of Survivor, Sandra not only won once but twice. First in Season 7 Pearl Islands and again in Season 20 Heroes vs. Villains. The Stamford, Connecticut native is the first player to ever win two seasons.
Bob Crowley
Who would've thought a 57-year-old high school physics teacher from Maine would be named Sole Survivor in Season 17? That's exactly what happened when Bob Crowley from Portland was crowned the winner of Survivor: Gabon, making him the oldest winner in the history of the show.
Bob's claim to fame came in the form of deception when he created a fake immunity idol and tricked his tribemates to vote off other players.
"Boston" Rob Mariano
Good ol' "Boston" Rob and by good, I mean bad. Known for his cutthroat moves and blindsiding, you couldn't help but love to hate him or hate to love him. Saying he loved this game would be an understatement.
He's the first player to compete in six seasons of the show, finally winning in Season 22 Survivor: Redemption Island. He even met his wife Amber while competing on the show. Hailing from Canton, Massachusetts Rob's accent and Red Sox hats continue to captivate audiences.
