If you were to look for the 'best lakes' in Massachusetts, most search engines would return with names like Lake Ashmere in the Berkshires or Crystal Lake in Newton.

Yet neither of those lakes (nor many of the ones you might be thinking of in your head right now) made a recent list from Insider.com of the 'Most Beautiful Lakes in Every State.'

Insider.com calls themselves a "global news publication that tells the stories you want to know" and they think you want to know about gorgeous waterfront spots in your state and those around you.

To help you find these local sweet spots, they search coast to coast for the most scenic, picturesque lakeside spots in every state and dubbed them the 'most beautiful' lake in that state.

Whether you agree or not, here in Massachusetts they believe Lake Mattawa in the town of Orange to be the best looking lake around.

Lake Mattawa might be new to you. It is a 118 acre freshwater lake open to fishing, boating, diving and swimming with two boat ramps for public use. It also has one town beach for the residents of Orange.

The unique thing about Lake Mattawa however, and likely the thing that has Insider.com calling it Massachusetts' 'most beautiful' is the extremely clear water. Lake Mattawa has several underwater springs feeding it, which makes the water so clear that you can see 15 feet or more in most spots.

The fall foliage is said to be amazing along this lake's shores as well, not to mention the sunsets you can capture here.

The major downside for those on the SouthCoast is that this lake is over two hours away. Much closer is Rhode Island's 'Most Beautiful" lake, the Bowdish Reservoir in Glocester, which is just over an hour's drive from New Bedford.

Still it might be worth a summer road trip to see Massachusetts' 'Most Beautiful" lake.
