Stand-up comedy has been making people laugh for decades and it’s always been one comedian, one microphone, and one audience.

A New Orleans comedian is looking to change the game of comedy with a brand new show that puts the imagination of local comics to the test.

Alex Cureau’s Stuper Fights wraps comedy, categories, and off-the-cuff hilarity into one ridiculous show, and it returns to Medici Lounge in Providence on July 31st.

Who Is Alex Cureau?

Originally from New Orleans, 34-year-old Alex Cureau moved to Rhode island a year ago and brought his love of comedy with him. For the past seven years, he has been doing comedy and loving every second of it, but he had a bigger plan in mind for the comedy scene.

“I started going to the Medici comedy shows on Thursdays and I realized their space was perfect for the idea I had,” he said. “It’s something I have been wanting to do for a while, and shout out to Suzy Ashworth and Ed Brady for supporting the idea and letting me do this silly show.”

Stuper Fights at Medici Lounge

Think of Stuper Fights as an unscripted show of pure ridiculousness.

6 players perform in front of 3 judges and an excited crowd as they are given random attributes, or “superpowers.”

“Each player is given their superpowers and a random character,” said Cureau. “For example, one comic had to be Justin Bieber with telekinesis, but his hands were taped to his hips.”

It’s not your typical stand-up show. It pushes the boundaries of live entertainment.

“It’s just something different,” said Cureau. “I wanted to do something that is fun for both the comics and the audience. It’s a chance for comics to cut loose, it’s a fun hang, and you get to be funny in a room full of people.
