A festive holiday tradition is coming back to Providence and the Johnson household is ready for it. The Holiday Lights Spectacular presented by Rhode Island Energy at Roger Williams Park Zoo is back.

Like many, I try and make the most of the holiday season, so my family and I decided to go to the Holiday Lights Spectacular last year, and boy, did we love it.

To be honest, we weren't sure what to expect, but as we approached the exit on I-95, the intense glow from the zoo immediately caught our eyes and our excitement skyrocketed.

Over 3.5 Million Lights and Festive Family Activities

More than 3.5 million lights illuminate Roger Williams Park Zoo. Every inch is decorated in twinkling lights, shiny snowflakes and more. You may even catch a glimpse of a few of the zoo's residents.

Not only did my husband and the kids have a blast, I had family in from California and they were blown away. Unlike other seasonal events like the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, visitors can explore the entire zoo. Take your time, stroll around, grab a hot chocolate or an adult beverage and even toast marshmallows by the fire.

Special Events: Discount Tuesdays, Santa Parade, and Character Meet & Greets

  • Discount Tuesdays: visitors can enjoy $5 off admission to the Holiday Lights Spectacular
  • Parade for Santa's arrival: December 4 at 5:30 p.m.
  • Meet & Greets with Frozen Favorites: See Elsa, Anna, Olaf and the Grinch Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Nightly Storytime with Roger the Red Panda: 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m.

They truly did a fabulous job with last year's display and I cannot wait to go back.

Event Dates, Operating Hours, and Ticket Information

The nightly event runs from November 27, 2026, through January 3, 2027, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
