SouthCoast’s Grand Re-Opening: Jim Scherer, YMCA SouthCoast

The SouthCoast continues to move in the right direction when it comes to opening back up and moving toward a new normal. Every morning with Michael & Maddie, our goal is to bring you first-hand experiences from local business owners and their thoughts on the present economy, what they have done to accommodate employees and customers through the pandemic, and what they plan on bringing to the table for the rest of 2020.

This morning, we had an opportunity to speak with Jim Scherer, President and CEO of YMCA SouthCoast, a company that is a staple to the SouthCoast community and home to an array of vital programs, from athletics to kids’ camps and organizations.

We were curious to pick his brain on one of the latest rules to surface. When gyms open their doors at the end of the month, patrons will be required to wear masks. Jim had some inside information on this policy, saying:

“We want people to wear a masks when they are in the facility, however, when they are in the middle of an intense cardio work-out, and we have socially distanced the treadmills and the elliptical equipment to be more than six feet apart, I don’t think it’s reasonable to have Michael and Maddie wear a mask…”

He plans to encourage social distancing at all times and will not expect a person to wear a mask while using equipment that is safely distanced from other people.

The president is excited for the future of the YMCA and anxiously awaits information on the guidelines for child-care and kids programs set forth by Governor Baker, so he can begin the official phases of opening the YMCA doors.
