SouthCoast Young Adults Report Strange Text That Could Be a Dangerous Scam
When I received a strange text on Sunday evening, I thought it was just a case of a person having the wrong number, but after sharing my story on Michael and Maddie this morning, it turns out it may be something a little more serious.
If you have receive a seemingly innocent text message from an unknown number, it may be a scammer.
I woke up Monday morning to a message from a random number saying, “hi are you Kyson? It’s Rose, we spoke on PoF last time I came up to come see my cousins…” The message continues by asking “Kyson” to meet up.
I immediately thought to myself, oh man, the guy gave her a fake number, how rude. I decided not to answer, mainly because I didn’t want to get involved, but I decided to share the story with the Fun 107 listeners to see if this has ever happened to anyone else.
Turns out, it has happened to quite a few people.
Mandy from New Bedford called in to tell us her experience.
“I just wanted to let you know that text message is a sex trafficking scam,” she said. “If you answered, they would have sent you a picture of a random girl, and then asked for a picture of yourself and ask you to meet up.”
Now I got nervous. Is this true? How did they get my number?
Mandy sent me other examples of women receiving similar text messages. The person reaches out, waits for a reply, and then attempts to get to know you in hopes of meeting you in person.
Mandy wasn’t the only one to chime in. Gazelle’s friend Aaron said, “If you try replying to their message, their reply won’t relate to anything you’re saying. I got one a month ago. Legit same text.”
I started to do some research and discovered that hundreds of TikTok users have reported the same text message, with the same two photographs being sent to each user.
WARNING: NSFW:
It is unclear what the scam entails or the severity of the scam, but it’s safe to say that if you get a random text message from a person addressing anyone but you, ignore it and block the number.
Stay safe, my friends.
