Sneaky Westport Paving Scam Costing Residents Thousands
Another day, another scam.
This time, the warning comes out of Westport, where people are being billed much more than expected for paving work.
Westport Police warned residents on social media this week:
"There is an asphalt company going around town claiming to be providing asphalt paving services at a 'GREAT PRICE,'" the department warned. "The work is quoted at one price and individuals are receiving bills at SIGNIFICANTLY higher rates. In some cases, the bill is tens of thousands higher than the quote."
Police didn't name the allegedly fraudulent business but offered some tips to help residents steer clear of offers that sound "too good to be true."
- Don't fall for pressure tactics.
- Don't react impulsively to offers or requests.
- Speak with family and friends to confirm offers being made.
- Research companies and tell them you'll contact them if you want work done.
"You can always call the police department if you have concerns, as well," police said.
