Dartmouth Police Arrest New York Man for Alleged Scam
DARTMOUTH (WBSM) — Dartmouth Police have arrested a Brooklyn, New York man on fraud charges after an alleged scam in which he tried to collect thousands in cash from the victim.
According to a release, police were contacted on Thursday, September 12 at about 5 p.m. by a resident who believed they might have been the victim of a scam.
The victim said they received a pop-up on their computer saying it had been hacked and that they needed to call “Apple Security” at a provided phone number. The person reached by phone claiming to be from “Apple Security” told the victim their bank accounts had been compromised and their personal information was used for illegal activities.
The victim was then contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, informing them that their accounts were compromised and funds needed to be withdrawn and moved to a new account immediately. The victim was instructed to make two separate $15,000 cash withdrawals on two separate days.
“The individual on the phone stated that they would send someone to the victim’s house to pick up the cash to deposit into a new account,” police said in a release. “On both days, an individual came to the victim’s house to pick up the cash. After the second interaction, the victim contacted the police.”
Detective Kyle Berube began an investigation into the alleged scam on Friday, September 13, and conducted a “reverse sting operation” along with detectives from the Community Impact Unit and patrol officers in order to identify the person picking up the cash.
About eight hours later, a man later identified as Bishi Zhu, 29, of Brooklyn, New York arrived at an undisclosed location to collect more cash. He was placed under arrest.
Zhu is charged with attempts to commit a crime and conspiracy (larceny by false pretense).
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
