When I heard that Ritual Sweat Society in Dartmouth would be closing its doors for good on July 31, I felt the same bittersweet tug so many others did. I'm here to let the record show that owner Tara Winterhalter isn't closing because business was bad. She's closing on a high note.

"It's totally bittersweet. It's been 10 years, and the lease is up," she said. "I wanted to end on a high note when it would still matter and leave a positive impact. I have spent so much time working 40-plus hours and commuting while making it work, but I want to take more time with the family and not running out the door to teach. It's been such a beautiful journey these 10 years."

As a new parent with an equally busy schedule, I could definitely relate.

More Than Just a Yoga Studio

As someone who spends far more time lifting weights than stretching, I'll admit I didn't think yoga was for me. Like a lot of guys, I had the misconception that yoga wasn't really my thing. Then I took one of Winterhalter's classes.

It wasn't just stretching in a heated room. It was challenging, energizing, and quite honestly, humbling. I left every class drenched in sweat, feeling stronger and more mobile than when I walked in. Her signature 11:11 The Practice classes quickly became something I looked forward to, pushing me in ways I never expected while helping me stay limber enough to complement my regular gym routine.

Breaking Stereotypes, One Class at a Time

My friend Matt Oliveira spent a lot of time DJing Ritual's classes. He and I started attending classes together, and before long, I found myself encouraging other guys to give it a try. I'd tell them, "If you think yoga is easy, come take one of Tara's classes." More often than not, they'd leave with a completely different perspective.

Over time, it was great seeing more men walk through the doors. Ritual Sweat Society created an environment where everyone felt welcome, regardless of their fitness background. Winterhalter had a way of making yoga approachable without sacrificing the challenge, and that's something that set her studio apart from anything else in the area.

A Community That Will Be Missed

For many, Ritual Sweat Society became much more than a place to work out. It became a community. Whether you were taking one of Winterhalter's high-energy hot yoga classes or joining one of the studio's other instructors for a strength-focused workout, every class carried the same welcoming atmosphere and positive energy that Winterhalter cultivated over the past decade.

There really isn't another studio around that does what Ritual did. Winterhalter found her own rhythm, built something uniquely hers and, in the process, inspired countless people (including myself) to step outside their comfort zones.

Leaving on Her Own Terms

As July 31 approaches, it's impossible not to feel a sense of gratitude for everything Ritual Sweat Society has meant to the SouthCoast. While it's never easy saying goodbye to a place that's impacted so many lives, there's something admirable about knowing when to close one chapter so another can begin.

To Winterhalter and every instructor who helped build this incredible community: thank you for ten unforgettable years. Wishing you nothing but happiness, success and more time with the family as you begin whatever comes next. While some businesses leave behind a storefront, others leave behind a legacy. Ritual Sweat Society leaves behind both.
