Biggest Snowstorm in Years Coming to the SouthCoast
A major weekend winter storm is taking shape for the SouthCoast, and 12 News meteorologist T.J. Del Santo says the region should prepare for a significant snowfall, with at least eight inches expected and the potential for a foot or more.
Del Santo spoke with The MGM Show about the latest forecast and said the picture is becoming clearer as the storm gets closer. He expects snow to begin Sunday morning, arriving light at first and continuing through much of the day.
When Will the Snow Start?
Del Santo said snowfall should begin Sunday morning and remain relatively light into the afternoon. Even with the slower start, he said a few inches could accumulate before the storm ramps up later in the day.
Snow Expected to Intensify During the Patriots Game
The bigger concern is what happens Sunday late afternoon. Del Santo said snowfall intensity is expected to ramp up right as many SouthCoast residents are settling in to watch the AFC Championship Game. From there, he expects heavy snow to continue through the night and into early Monday morning.
With cold temperatures expected, Del Santo said the snow should be lighter and fluffier, helping it pile up quickly once the heavier bands arrive.
Snow Totals Could Reach a Foot or More
As far as totals go, Del Santo said there is a strong signal for at least eight inches, and a very real possibility that parts of the SouthCoast see 12 inches or more.
Along the immediate coastline, including Westport, Dartmouth, New Bedford, and toward the Cape Cod Canal, Del Santo said the snow could be a bit heavier and there may be some sleet mixed in at times. Even so, he expects a sizable snowstorm overall.
"This will be the biggest snowstorm we've seen since 2022," said T.J.
