SouthCoast Bracing for First Real Snow of 2023 Season

Before we get to Nick Morganelli's forecast for the snowfall expected here on the SouthCoast, I have to offer a heartfelt apology to all of the SouthCoast.

As Gazelle pointed out this morning, it was inevitable that I would eventually jinx us. I've been touting a snowless winter for more than a month. I've been openly wondering if this could actually be a winter without any substantial snow accumulation.

We really haven't had to do much more than turn on the wipers and defroster to clear any snow so far this winter. There hasn't been a real need for a snowblower or even a shovel.

Nick Morganelli Calling for 4-6 inches on the SouthCoast

We had ABC6 Meteorologist Nick Morganelli on Michael and Maddie this morning. Nick is officially calling for 4 to 6 inches of snow across New Bedford and into Fall River.

Snowfall amounts could increase for spots that are farther inland and farther west. For example, the area north of Providence is expected to see upwards of 7 or 8 inches.

SouthCoast Snowfall Timeline

Nick believes the snow will start falling at around 10 p.m. Monday here on the SouthCoast, and then really start to pick up between 11 p.m. and midnight. Nick says the snow will accumulate all night long here on the SouthCoast. The snow will continue through midday tomorrow until it lightens up just a bit, but still lingers into Tuesday afternoon.

"The trick of the forecast is how long do these snow showers continue," Nick said. "I think it will continue until the end of the daylight hours before it finally pulls away from the coast after nightfall," the meteorologist told us.

Will the Snow Turn to Rain?

Nick doesn't expect to see a lot of change-over to rain until the afternoon when we reach temperatures in the mid to upper 30s, so we won't see much more accumulation in the afternoon.

While he expects the morning commute to be affected by the storm, he doesn't think the ride home will be eventful.
