Massachusetts Firefighters Create Core Summer Memories for Kids
There's no doubt about it. We just experienced one of the hottest weeks of 2025. It was a heatwave pushed many of us into survival mode.
One of 2025’s Hottest Weeks
Temperatures soared across Massachusetts, leaving people scrambling for any kind of relief. In the middle of the scorching conditions, one local fire department took a creative approach to lift spirits and cool things down.

Firefighters Set Up Hydrant Mist Station
In Salem, the town known for its infamous witch trials, firefighters rolled into a public park where neighborhood children were playing outside. They tapped into nearby hydrants, strategically set up hose stations and opened the valves.
Kids React to Instant Relief
Water came roaring out of the fire hoses, shooting high above the children’s heads. The result was a cool mist fell from the sky like summer snow, offering immediate, icy-cold relief from the heat. The kids were in disbelief and couldn’t get enough of the refreshing water.
Community Praises the Cool‑Down
Comments on the fire department’s Facebook page poured in, with most readers showing glowing support for the feel-good moment. One commenter, Mike Souza, wrote:
"This is the type of stuff I want my tax dollars being used for. The fire departments deserve the community support."
However, not everyone was thrilled. One reader voiced frustration over not being allowed to use their sprinkler to water the grass, even as kids were being soaked at the park.
A Tradition of Hydrant Relief
Many commenters also shared memories of when firefighters would open up hydrants in city neighborhoods, creating temporary water playgrounds during oppressive summer days for both kids and the occasional daring adult.
