Following the heartbreaking shooting at Brown University on Saturday, December 13, hospitals across Rhode Island – including Rhode Island Hospital – are facing an urgent need for blood donations.

In moments like this, something as simple as rolling up your sleeve can make a real difference. Blood donations help trauma victims, surgical patients, cancer patients, and so many others who rely on a steady, local blood supply every single day.

The Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC), which supplies blood to hospitals throughout the state, is urging eligible donors to step up now, not just in response to this tragedy, but to help ensure hospitals remain prepared for emergencies at all times. There's currently an urgent need of O and B blood types so if you can donate, please call (401) 767-4003.

If you’ve ever thought about donating blood, or it’s been a while since your last visit, here’s exactly how the process works.

How to Donate Blood in Rhode Island

  1. Locate a Donation Center
Start by finding a blood donation center near you. You can also schedule an appointment online for added convenience by visiting ribc.org/donate-blood.
  2. Register
When you arrive, you’ll be asked to verify your name, address, and birth date. You’ll need to present a photo ID and answer a few basic questions about your health history.
  3. Quick Health Screening
A donor specialist will perform a brief mini-physical, checking your pulse, temperature, blood pressure, and hemoglobin levels to make sure it’s safe for you to donate.
  4. Give Blood
During the donation, one pint of blood is collected using brand-new, sterile equipment. The actual donation process typically takes up to 15 minutes, and you’ll be monitored the entire time.

Afterward, you’ll have a chance to rest and enjoy a snack before heading out.

Why Your Donation Matters

Every single blood donation can help save multiple lives. Hospitals depend on a consistent blood supply not only during major emergencies, but every day for routine surgeries, accident victims, and patients undergoing treatment.
