Blues Brothers’ ‘Bluesmobile’ Just Chilling Roadside in Rehoboth

To paraphrase the classic film The Blues Brothers, it’s 977 miles to Chicago from Rehoboth, Massachusetts.

So why is the classic vehicle from that film, affectionately known as the "Bluesmobile," just chilling in the yard of a Route 44 auto dealership in Rehoboth?

My Uncle Tom first told me about it on Thanksgiving. He said at this apparently closed car dealership was a Bluesmobile chassis-deep in fallen leaves.

A few days later, he was riding down that stretch of road and pulled over to take a few photos to send to me, and it sure looked like it should have “Joliet” Jake Blues riding shotgun while Elwood Blues jumps a drawbridge or two.

The vehicle appears to be a 1974 Dodge Monaco, just like the Bluesmobile from the movie, and it’s made up to look just like the famous film car.

It has “Jake” and “Elwood” painted on the doors, and has the same star, “P1” and “To Protect and Serve” stylings on the body.

It also has a reproduction of the Bluesmobile’s BDR 529 Illinois license plate.

I’m not sure if it has a “cop motor,” “cop tires,” “cop suspension,” or “cop shocks” like the real Bluesmobile, but it sure looks cool.

According to my uncle, rumor has it that this was actually a film-used vehicle. It’s possible, because there were 13 different Dodge Monacos used as Bluesmobiles in the film. However, there are also a LOT of replica Bluesmobiles out there – pretty much any Monaco left laying around is turned into one sooner or later.

So could this be an actual screen-used prop from one of the greatest comedies of all time? I tried calling to find out more information about it, and if it is for sale, but I couldn’t get a working number.

I tried seven different numbers for the business that I found on the internet, and all but one was disconnected. The one that wasn’t, the person who answered had no idea what I was talking about when I brought up the dealership and the Bluesmobile.

If it is a real Bluesmobile, why is it in Rehoboth? Could it somehow be connected to John Belushi, who played Jake Blues in The Blues Brothers, being buried on Martha's Vineyard?

I’m hoping someone reading this article can get me in touch with someone who can provide me with more information. Mostly, I’d like to know if, like Elwood, I can get it in trade for a microphone.
