Dave Portnoy's latest Massachusetts pizza stop took him to Rehoboth, where he found a slice he enjoyed, even if it wasn't exactly what he expected. After visiting Rehoboth Baking Co., the Barstool Sports founder and creator of "One Bite Pizza Reviews" awarded the local bakery's pizza a respectable 7.7 out of 10.

Now, before you judge the score, you must understand that a 7.7 leans toward the higher end of Portnoy's scoring spectrum. So a 7.7 isn't that bad at all, and enough to make the restaurant "road-trip worthy."

Portnoy stopped by the bakery known for its breads, pastries, cookies and cafe menu, and asked staff which style of pizza best represented the shop. He was told to try the New Haven-style pie, though after opening the box, he immediately questioned the comparison.

Not Quite New Haven, Connecticut — But Still a Winner

"That to me does not look like New Haven at all," Portnoy said before taking his first bite.

As he worked through the slice, Portnoy admitted he could see hints of New Haven style in the chewy crust, but ultimately felt the pizza was trying to be something it wasn't. Still, he praised its texture, saying he loved how dry the slice was and how easily it could be eaten without becoming messy. "I think this is the best one I've done so far," Portnoy said during the review. "There's something I can't put my finger on."

The Bakery Connection Finally Clicked

A few bites later, Portnoy realized exactly what had been throwing him off. "It's a bakery pizza," he concluded. "Sometimes bakery pizzas almost taste more like the bakery overpowers the pizza. Not in a bad way, depending on what you like, but that is a bakery pizza."

However, it didn't hurt the score. Portnoy settled on a 7.7, placing Rehoboth Baking Co. among the better Massachusetts stops of his current pizza tour.

Sweet Treats Earn Mixed Reviews

Before leaving, a customer encouraged Portnoy to sample some of the bakery's desserts and also recommended stopping next door for frozen custard.

Portnoy picked up a chocolate chip cookie but wasn't nearly as enthusiastic as he was about the pizza, saying it didn't measure up to one of his personal favorites from Nantucket. Even so, he appreciated the warm welcome from customers and staff, wrapping up another Massachusetts pizza review with yet another score that local pizza fans can proudly add to the Barstool record books.
