Rare Sight Off Nantucket When Four Orcas Come Together
New England Aquarium caught a sight on camera during a recent aerial survey that experts say is extremely rare.
The long-standing Boston-based aquarium shared photos of not just one orca in New England waters, but four, all swimming together.
Scientists on staff at the aquarium say just one orca in this area is surprising, but finding four all swimming in a line is super rare. Yet it happened Tuesday morning.
While scientists with the aquarium were surveying the local waters by plane, they saw nearly 150 sea creatures during their seven-hour flight. But what stood out the most to them was spotting four large killer whales about 40 miles off of Nantucket.
The orcas were in a perfect line, fins poking out of the water, making their way to who knows where.
Lucky for us they passed by Nantucket during this aerial survey, so photos of this stunning sight could be shared.
The aquarium reported fin whales, minke whales, humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and more during their flight, but they weren't the only ones to see orcas this weekend.
Just yesterday the crew with Simon Sez Sportfishing posted their encounter with a killer whale off the coast of Provincetown.
With great white sharks being spotted along Cape shores and now killer whales hitting up our New England waters, it is going to be an exciting summer by the shore.
