Is Providence Really One of the Best Cities for Starting Over?

At the beginning of every new year, many will hit that invisible reset button and start on a path of self-improvement.

For some, that's hitting the gym and eating healthy, for others, it may be a complete fresh start. Wiping the slate clean and starting over isn't easy. However, according to Consumer Affairs, there are some cities in our country that are better suited to help you make a fresh start.

The Top 25 Cities for Starting Over in 2026

First, let me point out that Worcester is on the list of least favorable places to begin anew. While I have only visited a handful of times, I couldn't tell you one way or another why that is.

It comes as a bit of a surprise to me that Providence, Rhode Island, is included in the Top 25 cities in the country that would be great for making a fresh start.

What Makes Providence Ideal for a Fresh Start?

As someone who moved to Providence for college years ago, I was curious what made it an attractive place to start anew. The website lists several factors that were considered: ease of relocation, quality of life, and affordability. All of those to me seem relevant, yet relative to where you would be moving from.

Providence's ease of access to several major highways, its vast culinary options, and melting pot of culture surely don't hurt. It's a small big city with access to just about anything.

Comparing Providence with Other Major Cities

Compare all of those metrics to a city like Boston, and yes, Providence appears attractive, but when you compare it to the SouthCoast, it's not all that great.

I'll hand it to Providence, it's a great city for education, food, and shopping, but it's also only a forty-minute drive up 195 for us.
