The City of New Bedford is in the process of removing the Paul Revere sign from a billboard overlooking Interstate 195.

The sign's removal has been rumored to happen for over a year. City officials including Mayor Jon Mitchell have said the sign's infrastructure needed to be reinforced to ensure safe removal.

Ron Labelle, New Bedford's Commissioner of Public Infrastructure, is supervising the removal.

Labelle adds once the sign is down, the City will store it safely but he's not sure what will happen to the sign after that. Fans of the sign hope the City or a private company can raise the funds to restore the sign so it can be put to use elsewhere in the city.
