It’s been a long time since Patriots playoff football has felt like a full-blown New England event, but this season's run has sparked new life to what was a fledgling organization just one year ago.  It's hard to believe we're only 12 months removed from the Patriots making headlines with the firing of Jerod Mayo. Oh, how far we've come since last January!

Fun 107 Patriots analyst Nick Coit says the surge isn’t just about winning, it’s about the vibe. With Mike Vrabel setting the tone, Coit believes the culture is real again, and the roster is buying into it. The Patriots have played with a humble, underdog edge all season, and that approach has helped pull even newer fans into the mix.

What Makes This Patriots Team Different

Now comes the toughest test yet: the Houston Texans and their impenetrable defense. Coit agreed when I said, “I’m not scared of their offense,” Coit said. “I’m petrified of their defense.”

Texans Defense Is The Biggest Challenge

Houston finished the season as one of the stingiest units in football, allowing the fewest yards per game and giving up the fewest points per game in the AFC. Pass rusher Danielle Hunter leads a relentless front that can turn any mistake into instant points.

That makes the key for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye simple.  Maye needs to protect the football. Coit says Maye has been good about responding after rough moments, and this week needs to be all about smart decisions, avoiding turnovers, and “living to play another play.”

There’s good news on the injury front for New England. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who left the Chargers playoff game in concussion protocol, has been practicing and is trending in the right direction. Gonzalez is expected to play on Sunday.

Will Weather Play a Role in Sunday's Game

Weather could also be a factor. If New England gets a cold, snowy Foxboro day, Coit believes it can benefit a Patriots team that’s built to run and thrive in tough conditions, while Houston isn’t exactly used to playing in a snow globe.

Coit’s prediction: Patriots 20, Texans 17
