Newport Folk Festival Launches First All-Star Softball Game

This summer marks the 65th anniversary for the Newport Folk Festival and organizers are adding a unique new fundraiser to the weekend-long music event.

The sold-out festival will once again fill Fort Adams State Park with music lovers for three days, July 25-27. To kick off the three-day concert however, sports fans have a reason to head to Newport on Thursday, July 24.

Seems the historic music event will be taking over one of America's oldest ballparks for the first Newport Folk All-Star Game.

Star-Studded Softball Kickoff

Specifically the game will be softball and though the exact player lineup has yet to be announced, we do know the teams they'd be playing for. The event flyer touts both Team Morby and Team Goodman, presumably captained by singer/songwriters Kevin Morby and S.G. Goodman, who are both scheduled to perform at this year's festival.

If seeing two teams of festival performers sounds like a good time then get ready to scoop up the available tickets starting at 1 P.M. this Wednesday, July 2.

Online tickets through the Newport Folk Festival site are $10 or you can head to Newport to buy them in person at the Faherty clothing store at 130 Thames Street for just $5.

Cardines Field: A Historic Setting

Event organizers say they expect 3,000 people to attend this first ever charity softball game. That would mean a sell out for the Cardines Field, where the game is to be held.

Believed to be one of the oldest remaining ballparks in the United States, Cardines Field was built in 1908 and is still the home of the Newport Gulls baseball team. This July, it will be home to singer-songwriters taking the field for some softball.

All proceeds from this first-ever charity game will support the Newport Festivals Foundation's local free music lessons program. Concessions and merchandise will be available at the game, though no alcohol or food trucks will be permitted.
