The two surviving victims were taken to St. Luke's Hospital.

State police said the 25-year-old driver, also a New Bedford woman, is in critical condition.

The other passenger, a 17-year-old New Bedford girl, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows that the three were driving westbound in a rented Jeep Cherokee when it went off the road onto the median and struck a tree, according to state police.

It is currently unclear what caused the vehicle to go off the road.

The investigation is ongoing, state police said.

No further details are being released.
