NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police have arrested two teenagers on suspicion of illegally possessing firearms after a short foot chase Tuesday.

Police said organized crime detectives were monitoring activity in the city's South End when one detective saw two teenage boys enter the yard of an abandoned Purchase Street property.

When officers approached, the teens fled, according to police.

Following a brief chase, police said 18-year-old Sidney Pires-Fonseca of Thompson Street was stopped and found to have a 40-caliber Glock handgun loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

According to police, the second suspect kept running and hopping fences into nearby yards.

When the 17-year-old juvenile was eventually stopped, police said he had a Poly 80 9mm handgun loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with carrying unlicensed and loaded firearms and high-capacity magazines, as well as trespassing.
