NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The Halloween decorations are still on the store shelves and you probably haven’t even thought about what you’re serving with the Thanksgiving turkey, but the City of New Bedford is already looking for its Christmas tree.

The City posted on its official Facebook page this morning that it is the time of year when New Bedford “starts looking for a tree to display on the front steps of the downtown library for the holiday season.”

“So while you're apple-picking, pumpkin-carving, or picking out the perfect Halloween costume, keep an eye or ear open for anyone looking to donate a large tree to the City,” the City wrote.

The preferred tree is a 30-foot Balsam fir, but it can be other varieties of potential Christmas trees as well, or maybe one that isn’t quite that tall. However, it must have a point at the top for a star to be placed.

The best part? You don’t even need to cut it down. The City will send workers from the Department of Public Infrastructure to come and remove it from your property.

Last year, WBSM’s Barry Richard detailed the process the DPI goes through each year to pick up the tree, erect it outside the library and have it look as perfect as can be.

Then it is decorated and later lit up for the first time in a festive ceremony, one that has even been attended in the past by the legendary Mitch Miller of Sing-Along With Mitch fame.

The City said anyone who has a tree for consideration should contact the Mayor’s Office at (508) 979-1410.
